I utilize an integrated approach that is centered in humanistic theory. I primarily pull from person-centered, Gestalt, acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), motivational interviewing (MI), and Adlerian therapy. I bring a decade of experience as a massage therapist, yoga teacher, and reiki practitioner to my role as a psychotherapist. Our mental health impacts all other areas of our lives; it does not exist in a bubble. This is why I approach therapy from a holistic lens. As a therapist, I support clients in cultivating an awareness of how their experiences, past and present, affect mental health and overall wellbeing. As for the work of therapy, I utilize a variety of counseling modalities, adapting to the specific needs and goals of each client. I operate first and foremost from a client centered approach. I also utilize DBT, EMDR, art therapy, mindfulness training, and psychoeducation regularly. Areas of specialization include neurodivergence (including support for those struggling with the education system), anxiety, trauma, relationships/family related concerns, difficulties due to medical issues, social justice/systemic oppression, and psychedelic assisted therapy. I completed my master’s degree in counseling at Northwest University. Prior to becoming a counselor, I worked for many years as a teacher. I enjoy a variety of hobbies mostly centered around the arts, crafting, gardening, animals, and the outdoors. Through life I have served in many capacities as a volunteer and strongly value the role community plays in an individual’s overall health and well-being. Charlotte provides LGBTQIA+ mental health therapy, gender-affirming mental health therapy, and works with individuals who no longer live with their family of origin. She's a student of trauma-informed therapies as well as interpersonal neurobiology (the intersection of relationships, mind, brain, and body). Charlotte specializes in working with trans people who recently came out and who are navigating major life shifts as a result. She's currently developing a training to help cisgender clinicians work more effectively with trans people. In her spare time, Charlotte studies literature, philosophy, and astrology; cooks; travels; watches depressing foreign films; walks around Capitol Hill; plays bass in a local punk band. She's an inveterate coffee snob. She's more or less the stereotype of a Sagittarius. She is polyam, kink, and queer-affirming as well sex and body positive. Charlotte received her BA in English Education from a school in the middle of nowhere in Pennsylvania and went on to complete her Master's in Counseling Psychology from Seattle University. She is currently preparing for a doctorate to help train the next generation of therapists. Charlotte has studied with Dr. Janina Fisher and Dr. Gabor Mate. She's trained in Trauma-Informed Stabilization Treatment (TIST), Compassionate Inquiry (CI), and Internal Family Systems (IFS). I am a licensed clinical social worker practicing therapy in Seattle for over 14 years. Social Workers bring a unique perspective to therapy in the way that we conceptualize our work; I am interested in learning about each individual’s needs while also understanding the broader social and environmental factors impacting their lives. A commitment to social justice and advocacy is at the heart of what I do as therapist and person in the world. I’m not just a therapist, I am also an advocate, an activist, a problem solver, and a case manager. I am also passionate about decolonizing therapy, and aspire to integrate cultural and spiritual healing practices with more mainstream evidence-based modalities. My aim is to help clients heal from old wounds so they can live in the present and build a life that feels meaningful. Most of the clients I work with have experienced trauma of some kind, whether in a single isolated event or through many events over the course of their lifetime. I am skilled at helping folx explore the ways in which their trauma has impacted their life so that they can begin the work of unpacking their feelings, grieving what was lost, and finding a way to move forward with a deeper sense of connection to themselves and to others. Who I am I am a neurodiverse, queer, transgender individual (he/him) who is white, middle-aged, and able-bodied. I was raised in Appalachia and am now proud to call Seattle home. In my spare time, I enjoy cuddling with my dog (Zuzu) and cat (Matilda), supporting local theater, trying new recipes to enjoy with friends, discovering new music, and finding quiet moments in nature. My integrative approach draws from Internal Family Systems (IFS), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), psychodynamic theory, Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). In addition to psychotherapeutic techniques, I often call on my undergraduate training in philosophical inquiry to help clients who are grappling with fundamental questions about the nature of life, the universe, and everything (as Douglas Adams so neatly phrased it). I am firmly dedicated to practicing from an intersectional, anti-oppressive, and holistic lens that takes into consideration how the systems in which we live affect our lives. I operate from an integrated approach to therapy. Science has taught us that our genes (epigenetics) are impacted as far back as our grandmother's womb. Our early attachment experiences, genetics, identities, and environment shape our belief systems and how we have learned to navigate our world. This can impact our self-talk, our core beliefs about ourselves, and our worldview and beliefs about the nature of human suffering. I view therapy as an exploration of who you are and connecting with yourself compassionately to honor your story while recognizing that you are more than your story. You are an ever-evolving being. I am deeply committed to embodying cultural humility and creating a safe and non-judgmental space for healing. I believe that the therapeutic relationship is the most powerful tool in creating a space that allows compassionate inquiry into the self which is where I believe healing can best occur. I utilize aspects of Buddhist Psychology, attachment-based approaches, IFS, object relations (psychodynamic), DBT, ACT, and somatic therapies to support people in a way that makes sense for them and feels aligned with their experiences. I also have extensive experience supporting the LGBTQIA2S+ community and supporting those seeking gender-affirming care. I received my MA in Clinical Psychology from the Chicago School of Professional Psychology in 2007 and am currently pursuing my PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision at Saybrook University. In my free time I am an avid DIYer and have two sister cats, Calliope and Juno, who are connoisseurs of the cuddle puddle.
